1. Introduction
These Terms of Service (“Terms”) constitute a binding agreement between you (the “User, “you,” or “your”) and Expedition Intel, LLC, a Michigan limited-liability company (“Expedition Intel,” “we,” “us,” or “our”).
By accessing, browsing, or using the Expedition Intel website, mobile applications, or any other digital platform that provides the Expedition Intel services (collectively, the “Services”), you acknowledge that you have read, understand, and agree to be bound by these Terms, our Privacy Policy (available at www.expeditionintel.com), and any additional policies referenced herein. If you do not agree to these Terms, you must not use the Services.
2. Nature of the Services
2.1 Planning intel only
Expedition Intel provides digital expedition-planning information (“Intel”), which includes:
  • Free Scout Recon briefs – multiple route options with narrative overviews, basic distance/elevation data, and planning notes;
  • Live preview pages that display Scout intel in your web browser; and
  • Paid Blueprint itineraries – detailed day-by-day plans, risk notes, and starter GPX (or similar) files.
2.2 Not a guide, outfitter, or emergency service
We do not:
  • Guide, lead, or supervise any trip;
  • Provide transportation, lodging, or logistical services on your behalf;
  • Offer medical, legal, or professional safety advice;
  • Monitor conditions in real time; or
  • Provide rescue, evacuation, or any emergency services.
All activities you undertake based on our Intel are self-directed and solely at your own risk.
2.3 Informational purpose
Our Intel is provided for general informational and educational purposes only. It is not a guarantee of safety, suitability, or accuracy for any particular trip, terrain, or participant.
3. Eligibility, Accounts & Payments
3.1 Eligibility
You must be at least 18 years of age (or the age of majority in your jurisdiction) and have the legal capacity to enter into a binding contract to use any paid portion of the Services.
3.2 Accounts
If you create an account, you are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your login credentials and for all activity that occurs under your account. You must promptly notify us of any unauthorized use.
3.3 Paid Services
Certain Intel (including most Blueprints) require payment of a one-time fee or a subscription fee as described on the site. Access to paid Intel is granted only after successful payment.
3.4 Payment processing
Payments are processed by third-party processors (e.g., Stripe). We do not store your full credit-card details. Your interaction with the processor is governed by the processor’s own terms of service and privacy policy.
3.5 Refunds
All sales are final, except where required by applicable law (e.g., Michigan’s consumer-protection statutes for digital goods). If a refund is required by law, we will issue it within a reasonable time frame and only for the amount actually paid.
4. Outdoor Activities – Assumption of Risk, Release & Indemnity
4.1 Inherent hazards
Backcountry and outdoor activities involve inherent and serious risks, including but not limited to: severe weather, terrain hazards, wildlife encounters, equipment failure, navigation errors, and medical emergencies that can result in serious injury, paralysis, or death.
4.2 No guarantee of conditions or safety
You acknowledge that any Intel (including Scouts, live previews, and Blueprints) may be incomplete, outdated, inaccurate, or otherwise unsuitable for your abilities, group composition, or current conditions. Trail conditions, road access, regulations, and weather can change rapidly and without notice.
4.3 Your responsibility for fitness, preparation, and decisions
You are solely responsible for:
  • Evaluating your own and your group’s physical and mental fitness;
  • Obtaining any necessary medical or professional advice;
  • Securing, inspecting, and using appropriate gear, maps, navigation tools, clothing, and safety equipment;
  • Verifying all information (including conditions, regulations, access, and hazards) through current official sources (e.g., land-manager websites, up-to-date maps); and
  • Developing and executing your own emergency and backup plans, including notifying a third party of your itinerary and carrying appropriate communication devices.
Expedition Intel does not evaluate your fitness, skill level, or preparedness.
4.4 No guiding or emergency services
Expedition Intel provides planning intel only. We do not:
  • Guide or supervise trips;
  • Monitor your location or movements; or
  • Receive, respond to, or provide rescue, evacuation, or emergency services.
In an emergency, you must contact 911 or the appropriate local emergency services directly.
4.5 Assumption of risk
By accessing or using the Services, you voluntarily and knowingly assume all risks, both known and unknown, foreseeable and unforeseeable, associated with any outdoor or backcountry activities you choose to undertake, including the risk of serious injury, paralysis, death, or property loss, whether arising from:
  • Your reliance on the Intel;
  • The acts or omissions of others in your group; or
  • Your own decisions, actions, or inactions.
4.6 Release of liability (Michigan-compliant)
To the fullest extent permitted by Michigan law, you hereby release, discharge, and hold harmless Expedition Intel, its owners, members, managers, employees, contractors, and agents (collectively, the “Released Parties”) from any and all claims, demands, causes of action, damages, losses, costs, and expenses of any kind (“Claims”) arising out of or related to:
  1. Your use of the Services or Intel; and
  2. Any activities you undertake based in whole or in part on the Intel.
This release does not apply to Claims arising from gross negligence, willful misconduct, or violations of applicable law, which are not waivable under Michigan case law 
4.7 Indemnification (Michigan-compliant)
You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless the Released Parties from and against any and all Claims (including reasonable attorneys’ fees and costs) brought:
  • By you or on your behalf;
  • By members of your group, your estate, or anyone claiming through you; or
  • By any third party arising out of or related to your conduct in the field or your breach of these Terms,
to the extent such Claims are not prohibited from waiver by Michigan law.
5. No Professional Advice
The Services do not constitute medical, legal, or professional safety advice. You should consult appropriate professionals (e.g., physicians, licensed guides, attorneys, land-manager officials) before relying on any Intel for high-risk decisions.
6. Intellectual Property
6.1 Our content
All content in the Services—including text, graphics, maps, designs, logos, and GPX (or similar) files (collectively, “Expedition Intel Content”)—is owned by Expedition Intel or its licensors and is protected by U.S. and international intellectual-property laws.
6.2 License to you
Subject to these Terms and the payment of any applicable fees, we grant you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use Expedition Intel Content solely for your personal, non-commercial trip planning and for sharing with members of your own trip party.
6.3 Restrictions
You may not:
  • Resell, sublicense, or commercially exploit Expedition Intel Content;
  • Publicly post or redistribute full paid itineraries or GPX files in a manner that competes with our Services;
  • Remove or alter any copyright, trademark, or proprietary notices; or
  • Use the Services to develop or train a competing product or service.
7. User Content & Feedback
7.1 Ownership
If you submit any content (e.g., reviews, testimonials, photos, GPX tracks, feedback) (“User Content”), you retain ownership of that User Content.
7.2 License to Expedition Intel
You grant Expedition Intel a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, sublicensable license to use, reproduce, modify, distribute, and display your User Content in connection with operating, improving, and promoting the Services.
7.3 Representations
You represent and warrant that you have all rights necessary to grant the foregoing license, that your User Content does not infringe any third-party rights, and that it complies with all applicable laws.
8. Disclaimers
8.1 “As is” Services
The Services and all Expedition Intel Content are provided on an “as is” and “as available” basis, without warranties of any kind, either express or implied, including without limitation any warranties of accuracy, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement.
8.2 No guarantee of accuracy or safety
We do not warrant that:
  • Any Intel is complete, current, or error-free;
  • Any route is safe, passable, or appropriate for you; or
  • The Services will be uninterrupted, error-free, or secure.
Your reliance on any Intel is solely at your own risk.
8.3 Third-party content and services
The Services may contain links to or integrate third-party maps, APIs, data sources, or other services. We do not control, endorse, or assume responsibility for any such third-party content or services.
9. Limitation of Liability (Michigan-compliant)
To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law:
9.1 No consequential damages
Expedition Intel shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, including lost profits, lost data, personal injury, or property damage, even if we have been advised of the possibility of such damages.
9.2 Cap on direct damages
Our total aggregate liability for any claim arising out of or relating to the Services or these Terms shall not exceed the greater of:
  • The total amount you paid to Expedition Intel for the Services during the twelve (12) months preceding the claim; or
  • $100.00USD (One-hundred United States Dollars)
9.3 Jurisdictional limits
Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion or limitation of certain damages. In such jurisdictions, our liability will be limited to the maximum extent permitted by law.
10. Changes to the Services and Terms
We may modify the Services or these Terms at any time. If we make material changes, we will post an updated version on our website and revise the “Effective date” above. Your continued use of the Services after such changes constitutes your acceptance of the revised Terms.
11. Governing Law & Dispute Resolution
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Michigan, without regard to its conflict-of-law principles.
Any dispute, claim, or controversy arising out of or relating to these Terms, the Services, or any Intel shall be exclusively resolved in the state or federal courts located in Michigan. You and Expedition Intel hereby consent to the personal jurisdiction of such courts and waive any claim that a venue is improper.
12. Miscellaneous
  • Severability. If any provision of these Terms is found to be invalid or unenforceable, the remaining provisions will remain in full force and effect.
  • Assignment. You may not assign or transfer these Terms without our prior written consent; we may assign them at our discretion.
  • Entire Agreement. These Terms, together with our Privacy Policy, constitute the entire agreement between you and Expedition Intel regarding the Services and supersede all prior or contemporaneous communications, proposals, or agreements, whether oral or written.
